An Unhoped - for Windfall. Secret Treasures in the Synagogues of Eastern FranceReturn
The remarkable discovery of a genizah has led to an exhibition.
A genizah (pl. genizot) is a ritual repository for writings in which the name of God appears. By extension, this also applies to used ritual objects that cannot be thrown away and are therefore stored in a hiding place inside the synagogue to await possible burial in the local cemetery. This type of repository has until now been considered of little interest in France, whereas other countries in the "Ashkenazi" area have long recognized the historical, if not artistic value of these humble vestiges of communities wiped out by the Holocaust.
