Weißtannenturm tower

  • Weißtannenturm tower

Built at the time of the state horticultural show, the "Weißtannenturm" has risen majestically above the southern Old Rhine since 2003. The tower was inaugurated on the day the show was officially opened, coinciding with the year the silver fir was named "Tree of the Year". 210 steps lead upwards to the platforms of the 44-metre-high tower, whose panoramic view in all cardinal directions - as far as the Black Forest and Vosges mountains - is nothing short of impressive. The firm Werkgruppe Lahr designed the 70-ton tower: three trunks from Nordrach in the Black Forest region, which were donated by the Forestry Administration and the ‚white fir forum’, constitute the foundation pillars; they form an isosceles triangle stabilised by a steel net in filigree. A grouping of smaller trunks between the three main trunks creates an additional architectural element that is intended to symbolise the forest in miniature.
